Landssjúkrahúsið (LS) is the National Hospital in the Faroe Islands, specialising in 29 health care areas.
Our aim is to offer the Faroese population and international patients a high quality health service in as many areas as possible. In those areas of health care where the hospital is not specialised, our aim is to offer patients the best possible treatment through close co-operation with other hospitals in the Nordic region.
Landssjúkrahúsið serves as the National Hospital of the Faroe Islands and can generally be considered to be on a scandinavan level in the speciality areas present on the Hospital. LS is a teaching hospital and is cooperating with universities and educational institutions in the scandinavian countries and Poland. LS has 700 FTE (850 employees).
Service level
The hospital has an acute Emergency Department and the ICU (Intensiv care unit) has 5 beds, but can be expanded to 10 beds in case of emergency.
The hospital has 6 fully equiped operating theaters and has new MR- and CT-scanners.
We also operate a decompression tank in cooperation with Vørn (National Rescue Services).
LS has on call specialist consultants 24/365 in the following specialty areas (with adequate clinical support staff on duty (internship/junior doctors, specialist nurses etc.):

International co-operation and medevac
Cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and burns injuries are in general not treated in the LS and are normally sent to metropolitan Copenhagen, Denmark or Reykjavik, Iceland.
LS has an agreement with 4 airlines (Atlantic Airways, SOS, Nordlandair, Coast Guard Iceland) conc. planned or acute transportation of of patients abroad to Denmark, Norway or Iceland, with a normal response time of 3 hours.
LS has ongoing communication with Bergen Haugeland University hospital regarding treatment of burns.

Supervision
The National Hospital of the Faroe Islands is under supervision by the local representative (Landslæknin) of the Danish Health and Medicines Authority. The hospital was accredited by The Danish Healthcare Quality Programme, DDKM in February 2017.
